Hundreds of protesters are setting up this year’s Climate Camp on Blackheath in South-East London.

The police are not disrupting the protest as yet but have said they would photograph people entering the camp.

Unlike previous protests at Drax, Heathrow and Kingsnorth, this year’s camp has not announced plans for any mass direct action. However, a number of smaller protests are expected to take place.

It will run until next Wednesday, 2nd September and follows on from three recent camp protests in Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

In Wales, the camp was based next to the controversial Ffos-y-Fran opencast coal mine, near Merthyr Tydfil. In Scotland, the camp was near the site of a proposed opencast mine in South Lanarkshire.

The Blackheath campsite looks out over the city of London as well as being under the London City Airport flight path.

A wide range of workshops will be taking place over the course of the camp, giving information on everything from building your own wind turbines to the dangers of tar sands.

‘Climate Camp will demonstrate sustainable living while looking over the city and the market systems it represents and which we are challenging,’ said a Climate Camp representative.

A separate direct action protest is planned for October 17th to close down one of two coal-burning power stations. The public are being asked to choose between Drax in Yorkshire and Ratcliffe on Soar power station in Nottinghamshire.
